Our admissions policy

Since 1887, Ke Kula ‘o Kamehameha has honored our founder, Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Pākī Bishop, who passed to us a responsibility to care for her land and prepare future generations, through education, to lead, compete, and restore and sustain her people’s well-being.

Ke Ali‘i Pauahi, a chiefess of the Hawaiian Kingdom, established her private will in 1883 as her final chiefly charge, dedicating her estate to educate Native Hawaiians, much as families today create trusts for their descendants. Her will and the rights of her beneficiaries carry a unique political status, rooted in the Hawaiian Kingdom and affirmed in U.S. and international law.

Impact that extends beyond campus admissions

Today, Kamehameha Schools extends Ke Ali‘i Pauahi’s legacy beyond education, providing immense community impact through community programs and events, ‘āina stewardship, watershed protection, food systems, and renewable energy for all of Hawai‘i.

Education

  • 5,400+ K-12 students at KS; this frees up millions in DOE funding for other keiki statewide
  • $54M invested in FY24 in community programs and events

‘Āina

  • 251,000 acres of conservation lands protecting 59 endangered species
  • 82,000 acres of priority watersheds (10% of Hawai‘i’s most critical water)
  • 115,000+ acres of agricultural lands producing nearly 29M pounds of food in FY24

Clean energy

  • 178 MW of renewable energy generated on ‘Āina Pauahi
  • ~37% of Hawai‘i’s commercial solar and ~45% of utility-scale wind capacity

Public land contributions

  • Over 27,000 acres of Ke Ali‘i Pauahi’s trust now serve public uses, including Volcanoes National Park, Pu‘uhonua o Hōnaunau, Hanauma Bay, Ala Wai Golf Course, UH Mānoa facilities, and more
