‘Āina Ulu

‘Āina Engagement

Download this page as a PDF brochure »

‘Āina Ulu integrates culture- and place-based education to foster kinship and kuleana between kanaka and ‘āina. By bridging resource management and education, participants actively engage in Hawaiian culture and history, instilling a sense of pride in their heritage and connecting them to communities in meaningful ways.

Through ‘Āina Ulu, Kamehameha Schools collaborates with community-based organizations to conduct eco-cultural education on Kamehameha Schools’ agricultural and conservation lands.

Where is ‘Āina Ulu?

‘Āina Ulu collaborators currently restore and manage Kamehameha Schools’ land on the islands of O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Maui, Moloka‘i and Hawai‘i. These community 501c3 organizations have an existing profile in place-based resource management and in the delivery of culture-based education. Other KS lands have contracted caretakers on-site to maintain KS facilities and schedule and welcome visiting groups.

How do I participate?

Programs are offered over the course of the year with varying lengths of time commitments (i.e. Charter School, monthly community work day or summer internship). Individuals, groups, organizations or schools are eligible to participate depending on the particular program.

Those interested in cultural and environmental education for students and their families, with a focus on serving Hawaiian students, please refer to the list.
