Six juniors in 3rd year aviation class of Kumu Nadine Jacang, recently visited the HFD Aviation unit at Kalaeloa. They were supported through their visit by chaperones Aviation Club advisor Austin Lear, 11th grade counselor Kumu Keahi Kahana, and internship coordinator Sally Nhomi. As the first high school group to visit the HFD aviation unit, we appreciated the unique opportunity to see and get into the Honolulu Fire Department's newest rescue helicopter. Our future pilots got to sit in multiple cockpits, tried on and handled some of the rescue gear used, wore night vision goggles in a pitch black room, and walked through the pre-flight inspection requirements. It was a great opportunity to learn about how highly skilled and dedicated crew work with strong leadership and teamwork to serve as part of HFD's aviation rescue team. Mahalo to KS alumni – Billy Palaualelo ’03, Keo Gowan, ’04, and Shane Lum ’06 – who serve with HFD aviation rescue division and helped make made this amazing learning opportunity possible.
