Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i

Student life

Extracurricular and co-curricular activities are an essential part of a well-rounded education. Kamehameha Schools offers a broad spectrum of activities for its students with opportunities to sharpen their skills in leadership, sports, academics, community service, culture, and the arts. These activities reinforce lessons learned in the classroom, allowing students to apply those lessons in a real-world environment. These activities provide pathways for students to explore their interests and discover and delve deeper into their passions. Following are just some of the ways we help foster academic success outside of the classroom.

Beyond the school day, keiki will have an opportunity as they progress at our kula haʻahaʻa to get involved in a number of different after-school enrichment activities including hula, robotics, choir/music, and media productions. Take a look at the after school activities at kula haʻahaʻa and how they are helping haumāna develop the confidence and skills they’ll need to develop into the ʻŌiwi leaders we know they will be in the future.

Listen to our haumāna describe what taking part in these opportunities means for them and what they enjoy most.

Current clubs include -

  • Nā Lei o Kaiona Hawaiian Ensemble (Gr. 1-2 and 3-5)
  • Nā Hoa Mele and Nā Kani Leʻa music club
  • Keiki Builders VEX IQ Robotics Club
  • Media Productions Club
  • ʻAha ʻŌpio Student Government

Kula Waena offers a number of activities where students can participate and engage in learning beyond the classroom or as an extension to learning taking place within it.

  • STUDENT GOVERNMENT (ASKMS)
Students can hone their leadership skills by serving as a student government representative.  Each Kamehameha student is represented in student government, called the Associated Students of Kamehameha Middle School (ASKMS). See the middle school IG channel (@kulawaena) for more activities from ASKMS.

  • HOʻONELE EA ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLUB
As an extension to their digital media classes, middle school haumāna can participate in Hoʻonele Ea. Inspired by a huakaʻi cleanup at Kamilo, Kaʻū, where we saw a lot of plastic pollution, students and their kumu created Hoʻonele Ea where they would create designs for eco-friendly food storage as an idea where they could tangibly address an issue and hone their skills. The club has since evolved to take on a number of causes, including Lāhaina Restoration and more.

  • CONCERT BAND
As an extension to their course work, students who choose band as their elective in 7th and/or 8th grade also participate in concert band and have several performance opportunities throughout the year, including showcase and Christmas concert events. Students may also travel to perform at different sites across our globe. Past travel has included California, Canada, and the band is scheduled to travel to Japan in 2026.

  • ALOHA ʻĀINA ALLIES
Offered by the Pūʻawalau Center for ʻŌiwi Leadership and Advocacy, the Aloha ʻĀina Allies engaged haumāna after-school on what allyship means and deepen their understanding and knowledge of protocol and mele. Students engaged in project-based learning around areas of interest for them, and were able tro travel across our pae ʻāina and to the continent to see wahi pana, learn about advocacy, and engage with other culture-based education communities.

Kamehameha Schools’ policy is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.
