Leslie Aukai Opulauoho and Marjorie Ann Mei Lin Tam Opulauoho ‘Ohana Endowed Scholarship Fund (NEW)This endowed scholarship was created to honor their parents. The Leslie Aukai Opulauoho and Marjorie Tam Opulauoho Scholarship was established by their ‘Ohana and friends in 2024. Leslie Aukai Opulauoho, also known as “Les”, “PeeWee” and “Opa”, spent his early childhood in Bingham Tract, until the family moved to Papākolea Homestead, on the island of O`ahu. After graduating from McKinley high school in 1954, college was not an option and Les worked an array of jobs, often giving his paycheck to his mother for the family. Les met his sweetheart Margie, a local girl and elementary schoolteacher when she returned to Hawai`i after receiving her teaching degree from a school in Oregon. Les proposed marriage and then worked two years in Kwajalein to save money. He returned and they married in 1965 and started a family. Margie encouraged Les to pursue a college degree, and with her love and encouragement, he defied the counselors who challenged his dream of a college degree claiming, “he should be working to support his young family”. He began his journey at Leeward Community College, joined the college choral ensemble; then transferred to Church College, known today as BYU-Hawai’i in Lāʻie. Les drove the 80-mile commute 5 days a week from Pearl City to Lāʻie and back, often practicing his choral music on the drive. He worked hard and earned his bachelor’s degree in education in 1974. Shortly thereafter, Les became a counselor and outreach counselor, working almost 25 years at Dole Middle School in Kalihi until his retirement from the Department of Education, State of Hawai’i, in 1998. Les also had a beautiful baritone voice, and he loved to sing and strum the ukulele. One of his favorite songs to sing to Margie was “ ʻO Makalapua”. Les’s life path is proof that you can absolutely achieve your dreams, especially when others tell you that you can’t. Through your hard work, determination, and perseverance you can overcome a hardship, a learning disability or life challenges.
